Liam Doyle featured in our last newsletter as he set out on his Epic Bike ride adventure. He has now reached Malaysia and has cycled up the East Coast of Australia taking in Sydney, Byron Bay, Surfers Paradise, Brisbane, and Cairns before moving on to Bali then Singapore and now Malaysia. Here is a little update on his adventure from his blog….

“Four days of cycling in Malaysia and my ankle is telling me all about it. At least I can cycle and walk now so gotta get moving.

Bryan has joined me and we've done 413km over the past four days through the exotic beauty of Malaysia. This is a beautifully friendly place. There's been more toots of encouragement from motorists here in the first few days than in all of the rest of the trip and a number of people have stopped us for conversations on our trials and tribulations.

Bryan opted for a trailer with his gear in it as opposed to panniers. Turns out that panniers are a significantly easier cycling option than a trailer, given drag from extra wheels and the destabilising effect of having a load fixed to a single point on the back of the bike. While the trailer makes for a quirky visual amusement, it's no choice for cycle-touring. As a result there will be trip to the post office today to ship an amount of gear, including said trailer, back home. We need to get lighter and faster.

Given we've been averaging over 100km a day so far, dropping 20kg of weight should allow us to push longer days and cover more ground. There's even been talk of shaving legs to glean a few extra percentages of cycling efficiency. The jury's still out on that one!

Today we're resting in Kuala Lumpur. Where we will take in some sights.”
